Vehicle accidents on private property may not require police

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) –The Lawton Police Department would like to remind everyone that there are guidelines in place when it comes to vehicle accidents on private property.

The Lawton City Council passed resolution #15-80 on Oct. 13, 2015, which was implemented on Dec. 1, 2015. The resolution sets guidelines for when police are needed at a vehicle accident on private property.

"The Lawton Police Department will definitely respond to a private property accident if there is a personal injury, if the accident involves a drunk driver or someone under the influence of any other intoxicating substance, and if the accident involves a State or City vehicle," Det. Nancy Lombardo said.

In most cases, exchanging information between drivers is enough. However, you can download an official form from the police department's website, the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety's website or you can pick one up from the front desk at the Lawton Police Department.

Resolution #15-80 has reduced the volume of calls for the Lawton Police Department, which allows them to ensure a more timely response to priority calls.
