Fort Sill's Sergeant Major Association donates to homeless youth program

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - A group that helps homeless youth in Lawton received a surprise donation today from Fort Sill's Sergeant Major Association. $1,500 was given to a program called The Next Step. The program provides support and services to former foster care and homeless young adults between the ages of 18 to 21 in order to help them successfully transition into adulthood. The Sergeant Major Association has been partnered with the program for over a year now.

Founder of The Next Step Onreka Givens-Johnson says the partnership has helped their group with more than just money.

"We're really excited about that because we can give them a call and say we need X amount of people tomorrow, and we have more than what we need," said Givens-Johnson.

Givens-Johnson says she appreciates the members of the Sergeant Major Association who choose to come out and volunteer. Captain Command of the Sergeant Major Association says they are always trying to find ways to reach out to The Next Step program.
