LAWTON, OK (KSWO) – A tradition nearly 20 years in the making was observed on the banks of Medicine Creek Saturday afternoon.

Nearly 100 brave souls jumped into the icy cold water at 2 o'clock Saturday. The event started in 1997 when some patrons of Park Tavern decided to jump in the creek in the middle of winter.

"It was really fun last year and as weird as it felt I just wanted to do it again this year," said Leighla Beteta.

Participant Leighla Beteta says the first time she tried the jump a year ago she was scared, but she has no fear this year.

"I remember being pretty nervous last year and I was like okay what if my muscles seize. I mean what if I stop breathing and I didn't I was fine and I was like I can do this again," said Beteta.

12-year-old Abigail Mansell says she has been looking forward to this day for quite a while.

"I just know that I have always wanted to and I mean I am kind of a dare devil so it was fun," said Mansell.

This year was David Anderson's third year to participate. He says he keeps coming back for the atmosphere of the plunge.

"Just come over here to visit and this event was happening at the time and we just thought we would join in the fun, bring the whole family," said Anderson.
