LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -A Lawton man was arrested for child neglect after he left four children, including a six-month-old baby, alone while he left the house.
Friday, the grandmother of three of the children called police and said she was taking them with her, but was leaving the baby on the porch. Not long after police arrived, the father, Travis Carpenter, showed up on a bike.
Carpenter said he had his oldest child, a 13-year-old, in charge while he stepped out. He said the teenager must have left the house and his younger siblings alone…the oldest of whom is only 9. The other children were 8 and 6 years old.
When police reached the children's mother at her workplace, she said Carpenter was supposed to be watching the kids while she was at work.
Police say the home was a mess, with bicycle parts scattered around and no food in the fridge.
DHS decided to remove the children from the home and place them in the care of Carpenter's mother for the time being.
Carpenter was arrested for child neglect and a drug charge was added when they found a glass pipe and meth in his pockets.
