Arrested: Man claims he ran because his child will be born soon

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) –A man led police on a chase Wednesday night after he was pulled over for speeding.

Toron Arlee Melton was pulled over at Northwest 80th Street and Cache Road just before midnight Wednesday after police clocked him driving 45 mph in a 35 mph zone. Melton pulled over and admitted to police he didn't have a driver's license on him. When asked if he had a valid license at all, Melton shifted his car into drive and sped off.

Police believe Melton reached speeds of up to 70 mph through the neighborhood before he tried to turn west on Northwest Andrews Avenue and wrecked his car in a yard at the intersection of Northwest 80th and Andrews Avenue. At that point, police say Melton got out of his car and started to run toward Northwest Gray Warr Avenue.

Officers were able to get close enough to Melton to use a Taser. Melton was hit in the left upper shoulder and left buttock. Thirteen minutes after police made their first contact with Melton, he was arrested.

While police searched Melton's car during an impound inventory, they found a digital scale and two baggies of marijuana.

Melton was taken to the Lawton City Jail for speeding, driving with a revoked license, eluding police, resisting police, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

Melton told the officers he ran so he could see the birth of his child in a few days.
