LAWTON, OK (KSWO) –A Lawton man met with police Friday evening, Feb. 19, after he was scammed while trying to meet a woman.

The man told police while he was trying to arrange a meeting with a woman he met online for sexual favors, he was told to send $200 through Money Gram before meeting her. After he sent the money, he was called by man claiming to be her boss. The boss instructed him to send another $380.

After sending $580, the man realized he wasn’t going to get to meet the woman and reported the incident to police.

Lawton Police Detective Nancy Lombardo wants to remind everyone that “sexual favors in exchange for money is prostitution and not dating.” She says the request to send money via Money Gram should have been a red flag; legitimate dating sites typically have a monthly fee to be a member or to meet people, and not a system where you pay to meet a specific person.

It’s encouraged to meet a first date from an online dating site in a common and public area.

An Oklahoma Forestry Services task force is joining the fight against a wildfire in Kiowa County. It's burning about 17 miles southwest of Quartz Mountain State Park. They're calling it the "Flat Top" fire. The last update shows the fire has consumed about 70 acres. The O.F.S. says the biggest problem is that fire is burning in rough terrain. Local fire departments, including Blair and Martha are among those fighting it.
