LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -Heart disease is the most common cause of death and disability in women.

That was the topic of discussion at Comanche County Memorial Hospital's Good Hearted Woman luncheon, which was held in observance of National Heart Month.

Cardiologist Dr. Ronald Woodson spoke about causes, treatment and prevention for heart disease. He hopes women walked away with a better understanding of what causes heart disease and what puts them at the most risk for developing it over their lifetime.

"Not only heart problems, but also strokes, because it is all cardiovascular disease and it's very common. It is much more common than cancer, and so we need to try and get a handle on that in this country if we are ever going to improve our health," Dr. Woodson said.

Woodson also spoke about the importance of getting to the hospital as quickly as possible if you have any of the signs or symptoms of a heart attack, because the quicker you receive treatment the better the outcome.
