WICHITA MOUNTAINS WILDLIFE REFUGE, OK (KSWO) –A wildfire broke out Tuesday and has burned approximately 100 acres on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Lightning is believed to have sparked the fire Tuesday. Responders say the fire started about one mile west of Mt. Scott and went up Mt. Wall, which is northwest of Mt. Scott.

The refuge’s fire department started fighting the fire around 3 p.m. and two planes were called in to help put out the spreading fire at 4 p.m. They pulled water from Lake Lawtonka and dumped it on the fire.

Ground forces went back in at 7 p.m. to mop up any hot spots.

That's about 20 percent of their enrollment. Empire Mayor Perry Brinegar says staff and workers spent the morning cleaning and disinfecting classrooms, hallways, and different areas (gyms, buses, lunchroom). School will resume Monday morning.
