ALTUS, OK (KSWO) -The state's budget crisis has forced layoffs at another area school.
This time, it's Western Oklahoma State College in Altus where the Board of Regents voted Wednesday night to eliminate five staff positions. A sixth position was considered for elimination, but the board postponed discussion on it for another meeting. The reductions will take effect July 1.
WOSC president Dr. Phil Birdine released a statement this afternoon on the cuts, saying, "Cuts of this magnitude can seriously threaten the mission of the institution and eventually setback any progress our region has experienced in terms of economic development."
College officials have reduced employee travel, suspended purchasing and have suspended college memberships in professional associations.
