LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - One of the parents charged in the death of their 1-month-old child waived his preliminary hearing.
Alexander Sawyer was scheduled for a court hearing on Thursday to determine if there was enough evidence to stand trial for second-degree manslaughter. Tuesday, Sawyer waived that hearing. A judge will set a trial date at another hearing later this month.
Sawyer's baby died about a year and a half ago. The child's mother said the baby had rolled off their bed and became wedged between the mattress and a wall while they were sleeping. Investigators blamed the death on parental neglect, and the fact that the parents were sleeping with their three children in one bed.
The child's mother pleaded guilty to a second-degree manslaughter charge in December and was sentenced to two years in prison.
A judge has set Alexander Sawyer's trial for the May docket.
