MERIDIAN, OK (KSWO) - A standoff in Stephens County between law enforcement, and a Duncan man wanted for drug related offenses ended with six arrests Tuesday. Stephens County Sheriff deputies went to a home in Meridian a half a mile south of Refinery Road on Old Highway 81 to serve an arrest warrant for Richard Franklin Smith around 4:30 p.m.

Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney says when the deputies got to the house, people started running out of the house, but Smith remained inside and refused to leave. Law enforcement had residents near the standoff evacuate their homes for their safety. After about 45 minutes deputies did go inside the home to arrest Smith.

Sheriff McKinney says this arrest is part of an investigation into drug trafficking in the county.

"There is some drug trafficking stuff, there has been a lot of burglaries in our area," said Sheriff McKinney. "Like I've said many, many times before a lot of the thefts and burglaries that occur in our county, and I think in most counties, can all be tracked back to some type of drug activity."
