LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - In recognition of the first ever World Speech Day, Cameron University students gathered in downtown Lawton where they were encouraged to make their voices heard.

World speech day is observed globally on March 15, but because students were out for spring break then, they celebrated it Tuesday. The Cameron-sponsored event gives every student, regardless of sex, gender, race or religion, the opportunity to be heard in a public setting.

“People can stand up and recite poetry if they want to the idea is to give just the normal average person a voice, to say something, to make a claim, and to let other people hear them, to be heard,” said Cameron University Assistant Professor Teresa Morales.

Speeches on World Speech Day normally involve ideas that can help other people in large ways or small.
