FORT SILL NATIONAL CEMETERY, OK (KSWO) - For Vietnam Veterans Day, and a ceremony at Fort Sill National Cemetery honored those here at home who served, and also those who did not come home.

Every veteran today received a pin, and a commemorative stone was unveiled that honored the local chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America. A wreath was also put on display for the soldiers who passed away.

Vietnam veteran Pat Powell says the most emotional part of the ceremony was when the pins were handed out.

"It meant a lot to people,” said Powell. “They thought about their 58,370 members whose names are etched on the wall that you know will never get a pin like this. They won't know how important their service was to us or to the American people."

Marty Talley with Fort Sill National Cemetery works to give these veterans the welcome homes they deserved almost half a century ago.

"They’re special people, and I just feel like I can relate to them,” said Talley.  “I’m a veteran, also. I spent 30 years in the Army so I understand what they do, what they did. And once you serve, you never get rid of it. It’s in your blood."

This is one of the many events set to honor Vietnam veterans. In 2012, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring programs to be set from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025 to honor Vietnam veterans.
