LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - Three coaches with southwest Oklahoma ties will be inducted in to the Oklahoma Coaches Association (OCA) Hall of Fame this summer. Bruce Harrington, Clarence Madden and Tim Reynolds will be a part of the 2016 class.
For Harrington, the boys' basketball coach at Eisenhower, this is the cherry on top of a memorable last 13 months. He led the Eagles to their first State Championship in 2015 and was named the NFHS Oklahoma Coach of the Year shortly after. Ike had another good season in 2016, advancing to the 5A semifinals. It was at the State Tournament where Harrington learned of his impending induction.
"It was overwhelming. It was great. I was of course very excited. I was really concentrating on the State Tournament, so I didn't get to enjoy it as much then. But now as I reflect back it was a great feeling," Harrington said.
"It's important to me because my dad was a coach. He's in the Hall of Fame. I've been around my dad's friends and many of them are in the Hall of Fame. It's just a very big deal to me just because you know I've grown up in the coaching family and have been around it. It's a great honor to even be thought of," Harrington added.
Madden spent 25 years as part of the Lawton High football program as an assistant and then as the head coach. He helped develop several college and NFL players, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Will Shields. Since leaving Lawton High, Madden has spent time as an assistant coach in Arkansas and at Elgin and Cache. Like Harrington, Madden was caught off guard by the news of his Hall of Fame induction.
"We just had a grandchild so I was a grandpa and I had just had kidney stone surgery the day after that and then I get that call. I was with my grandson and I told him first that I got inducted in to the Hall of Fame and asked if he wanted to go to the clinic with me this summer," Madden said.
"I was so excited because it's just a great honor. I'm humbled by it. It's not an honor that recognizes one person to me. It's an honor that recognizes all of the past players we had and all our coaching staffs we had," Madden added.
Like Madden, Reynolds experienced a successful run as a football coach in Lawton. He was the head coach of the 1990 Eisenhower team that finished 14-0 and won a State Championship. The Eagles were also USA Today's top ranked team in the country that year.
Reynolds, Madden and Harrington will be inducted in to the OCA Hall of Fame July 23 in Tulsa.
