LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -The Intensive Care Unit at Comanche County Memorial Hospital reopened Thursday morning after it was forced to close down 10 months ago.
The hospital was forced to shut down the ICU due to a shortage of nurses. Patients needing the specialized care that the ICU offered were instead treated in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.
Chief Nursing Officer Chris Ward says while patients have been receiving good and safe care, he is glad to have the unit staffed and back up and running.
"It is very important for us not only psychologically, but also for the community itself. It gives us the opportunity to be a regional referral center, which is what we are very proud of. We are very excited to be able to serve the community in this way," Ward said.
Ward says the reopening of the unit really expands the hospital's capacity and allows them to treat people who need that specialized care. He is grateful to the hospital's nurses and staff for allowing them to make it possible to reopen the unit.
