LAWTON, OK (KSWO) –A man is impersonating a City of Lawton worker and is trying to scam people.

The City of Lawton Neighborhood Services Division says at least three people have contacted them over the last two weeks about a white man between 25 and 30 years old, wearing a City of Lawton jacket and possibly driving a GMC Envoy. They say the man tells them they’ll be fined if they don’t pay him on the spot to mow their tall grass.

The victims of the scam paid the man, believing they were paying the City of Lawton.

Jim Russell, the assistant city manager, says the culprit is not driving a City of Lawton truck and is not affiliated with them. Russell says all code enforcement officers carry a badge and you should ask to see it. If you still have doubts, call Neighborhood services at 580-581-3467, or Russell’s office at 580-581-3301.

“If grass is in violation, we will send a notice to comply in the mail.  We will never ask for money or volunteer to mow a lawn to avoid the citation,” Russell explained.
