STEPHENS COUNTY, OK (KSWO) -In Stephens County, two candidates have filed to run for sheriff.
Sheriff Wayne McKinney, the current sheriff, is running for a third term while vowing to continue the practices that he says modernized the sheriff's department and led to more criminals being prosecuted and off the streets. He says his number one priority is public safety.
His opponent, Republican Ladd Polk, has served the Duncan area as owner of Bailes-Polk Funeral Home for 20 years. Polk says if elected, he plans to better the department's relationship with surrounding agencies and to continue to fight drug crimes.
Residents will head to the polls for the primary election on June 28. Since there is not a Democrat running, there will not be a general election. Whoever wins will assume the role as sheriff on Jan. 1.
