LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - One Lawton educator reigns supreme Tuesday evening after being named the district's teacher of the year.

Charles Kirchen is a social studies teacher at Eisenhower High School, and currently teaches advanced placement and regular world history.

Kirchen says he was surprised by Tuesday night’s award and says he's doing what he loves.

“As a social studies teacher the funnest part we get to look at the world,” said Kirchen. “Lawton, for its size, it is a crossroad of the world. Teaching world history or social studies, it's easy here because Lawton has very much a world view."

Among the prizes Kirchen won the use of a car for the next year. He will now be in the running for state teacher of the year. The rookie of the year award went to Halley Ellis, who teaches second grade at Crosby Park Elementary.
