OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (KSWO) –A bill designed to help keep some Oklahoma drivers without a physical copy of their insurance from being fined has been signed into law.

House Bill 2473 removes the penalty for not showing valid car insurance if law enforcement is able to verify that there is insurance on site. Law enforcement currently has access to a person’s coverage by looking up the tag or VIN.

“I think we all have forgotten our wallet or jumped in our spouse’s car and accidentally failed to have our insurance verification form on us,” said Walker, R-Tulsa, the bill’s author. “It’s a universal mistake and one that should not carry a fine when law enforcement has access to a database to verify insurance.”

The driver is unable to prove that they have insurance and the officer is unable to verify it as well, the driver could still be fined.

“This doesn’t do away with the need to carry an insurance verification form,” Walker said. “It basically just provides grace to law-abiding citizens for a simple mistake. That grace does require that their insurance can be verified through a database.”

The bill pass the Oklahoma House of Representatives on March 1 and the Oklahoma Senate on April 12. Gov. Mary Fallin signed the bill into law Tuesday, April 19. It will go into effect Nov. 1, 2016.
