ALTUS, OK (KSWO) -Area legislators held a legislative luncheon in Altus and featured Rep. Charles Ortega and Sen. Mike Schulz.

Both of the legislators spoke to the community they represent, filling them in on everything that has been happening this legislative session. They each then took questions from the crowd and Ortega says one of the biggest questions he gets right now is about the budget

"We're facing a $1.3 billion shortfall, so that impacts everybody across the state. So, we're in the process now of trying to develop a budget and everybody is vigilant about waiting to see what's happening," Ortega, R-Altus.

Schulz has announced his plan to run for president pro tem, but recently he has had some competition as Sen. Ralph Shortey announced he will also be running. Schulz says he is open to the competition.

"I don't think anybody should ever just be granted a seat, I think you should have to work for it a little bit, so I look forward to what's going to take place over the next few days and our first step in our election process,” said Schulz, R-Altus.

The election for the president pro tem will be in May.

Several crews responded to a series of fires along Highway 7 near the Comanche/Stephens County line.  Crews still have not determined how they started, but they suspect the fires were ignited by a vehicle that could have been inadvertently dragging a chain, or a trailer that was sending out sparks. Firefighters were able to get it under control and keep it from spreading too far.
