LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - Comanche County residents laced up their walking shoes, joining forces with several law enforcement agencies for the 25th annual Moonlight Walk Against Drugs.

Each year the walk in Elmer Thomas Park helps bring awareness to the issues drug and alcohol abuse has on our community. Police officers say when criminals see the public and the law standing together, it sends the message to criminals that they don't stand a chance.

Lawton Police Chief James Smith says they aggressively work to reach the youth, hoping to steer them clear from a life of crime.

"Number one that the police is here to assist them and to also teach them about drugs and alcohol and how not to go down that path and just to educate children about what's the best way to live their lives," said Chief Smith.

The annual event is sponsored by Lawton Crimestoppers. The money raised from their largest fundraiser of the year helps to fund the rewards given in exchange for crime tips that lead to an arrest.
