LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -When severe weather hits, contractors and roofing companies can show up from out of state knocking on our doors, asking to make repairs.
Comanche County officials warn to ask for references and to do a background check before any work is done. They say a legitimate company will not ask for the full payment before the work is completed.
Comanche County Emergency Management Director Michael Merritt says make sure you document the repair process and always ask for receipts of materials purchased.
"Take pictures before they show up and take pictures throughout the whole experience and then take pictures after they are done so that if anything goes wrong you can document what it was like before, during and after and what they actually did," Merritt said.
Merritt recommends using local contractors that have a proven track record that can be verified through the city and the sheriff's department. He also added that if you are cheated by one of these fly-by-night roofing crews, more than likely you aren't the only one.
