LAWTON, OK (KSWO) –The Lawton Police Department is glad to have their K9s after making another drug-related arrest Monday afternoon.
Police caught a vehicle speeding near Southwest Washington Avenue and 11th Street and saw it abruptly stop after passing a stop sign. The detectives stopped the vehicle and recognized the front seat passenger for having prior drug charges. A K9 was called in to check the vehicle and Be gave a positive alert.
At that time, the driver, Shawna Ernst, ask the detectives, "Can I just hand you my weed now?" Ernst told them the marijuana was in her purse and they found approximately 20 grams of marijuana, unused baggies and rolling papers. They went on to find $7,298 in various bundles and a ledger detailing drug transactions in the driver's door.
Ernst was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Police say she has had at least two marijuana-related charges and numerous other drug charges in the past. The passenger was let go.
"The Lawton Police Department K9 teams have been out working the streets of Lawton a little over a month and have already been proving to be an effective tool in narcotic detection, having assisted with several recent narcotic arrest.
