DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) -A Duncan man is behind bars, accused of shooting his wife's boyfriend in the throat, leaving him in critical condition.

Investigators say it appears to be a crime of passion that escalated quickly. It happened around 10 p.m. Thursday at a home on the 600 block of 8th Street. Investigators say Travis Steel and his wife have had a strained relationship, and that he had just moved out Wednesday.

He told police he returned to the house Thursday night to get his phone charger and that's when he heard sounds inside the home that convinced him she was with another man. He kicked in the door and found the boyfriend hiding in a closet. Steel grabbed a gun and shot him in the throat.

"They were in the process of separating. The relationship between the boyfriend had been going on for a little while. They all knew each other, all three of them," Det. John Byers said.

After the shooting, Steel stayed at the scene and was actually giving the victim medical aid when first responders arrived. Steel was arrested at the scene.

At last check, the victim was listed in critical condition at OU Medical Center. Police say the couple's children were sleeping at the time, but no one else was hurt.

Steel is being held at the Stephens County Jail and faces a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
