FORT SILL, OK (KSWO) - Staff Sergeant Dustin Randall was announced as Fort Sill's 2016 Drill Sergeant of the Year Friday.
The announcement ceremony followed a week full of grueling competition as Randall faced off against nine others to earn the title.
Randall will soon start preparing as he's set to compete in the national competition in Fort Jackson, South Carolina in September.
He said last week's competition was a good way to test his limits, and he's honored to be named the winner.
"I've got some really excellent drill sergeants to my left and right," Randall said.
"There's no better assessment to self-assess yourself by than a competition with your peers. To me that's the bottom line."
Last year's Drill Sergeant of the Year for Fort Sill, Drill Sergeant Franco Peralta, will help Randall prepare for the competition.
Randall said he's already preparing himself mentally for what's to come.
Sergeant Randall has been in the army for eight-and-a-half years and has served two tours in Afghanistan.
