LAWTON, OK (KSWO) –The Lawton Police Department says they responded to numerous water rescues in just over an hour Sunday night.

Torrential downpours hit the city of Lawton Sunday evening, causing flooding throughout the city and numerous stranded drivers or people trapped. LPD says between 6:32 p.m. and 7:49 p.m., they went to 15 motorist assists, 13 water rescues and one home rescue at Southwest 12th Street and ‘J’ Avenue. LPD says the downtown area, East Gore Boulevard and Northwest Cache Road were some of the hardest hit areas.

Viewers sent in photos and videos that showed rushing water along neighborhood streets, stranded people in a park, cars floating away with people inside trying to get out and parking lots that turned in to lakes.

A few hours after the rain stopped, the water drained away and things went relatively back to normal.
