LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -Fourth and fifth grade LPS ACTS students learned an important lesson in civic responsibility through music.
ACTS is the gifted and talented pull out program for the district that is meant to enrich the regular curriculum. The "Tapping the roots of American Movement" course taught students about the power and influence of music and musical artists to promote social change during the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement and the Wounded Knee Massacre .
Mandee Thomas, an ACTS teacher, challenged her students to protest and enact change through song.
"It's great to be able to enrich kids so that for a little while they can get out of that testing mentality for just a little while and they get to explore and discover. You know, the kind of thing that all teachers wish they can do every day, they just don't have the time. Music is their voice, you know. It's their individual expression and that's what music is about…freedom. American roots music is about freedom," Thomas said.
Thomas says she's seen her students exhibit confidence, empowerment and enhanced acceptance as they find their voices through music.
