DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) -Even though the school year is not over just yet, one Duncan church is already preparing to help students in need for next year.

New Life Church in Duncan is taking donations for their back to school bash, “Fiesta at Fuqua." Families are given a free backpack full of school supplies. They handed out around 1,000 in 2015, but hope to do more this time with the community's support.

Angela Marmaduke, one of the organizers, says it took more than $7,000 to pull off last year’s event. While money is a big part of it, she says you can also donate school supplies like notebooks, pencils and glue.

Marmaduke knows firsthand about the benefits of the back to school bash.

"I know in the past when my kids were younger, we went to Fiesta at Fuqua and (got) free school supplies for the kids. It was just a huge blessing, it was a huge help," Marmaduke said.

She knows there are still many families like hers who simply don't have the money to buy supplies for all their children. She hopes the community will step up to help so the kids' teachers won't feel compelled to.

"I don't think that they should be having to pull out of their pockets to pay for school supplies for the children. They are doing it out of the love of their hearts and the kindness. Teachers don't do what they’re doing if they don't love their job," she said.

Marmaduke says there's no donation that's too small or too big.

"If each person in Stephens County helped, donated whatever they could, we don't care if it's a dollar or five or one thousand, every dollar counts in this community," she said.

She says Stephens County is a very giving community, and she knows they will come through to help pull off this event. She says it's all worth it to see the smiles on the kids’ faces.

"The kids open up those bags and they’re excited and they see the crayons and the markers and they love it. They just love that kind of stuff," she said.

Marmaduke says they will be rewarded for their donation in the end.

"We just need to continue to step up and keep giving and giving, because it always comes back to us, it always comes back our way," she said.

If you'd like to donate to Fiesta at Fuqua, you can call the New Life Church in Duncan at 580-475-0014. You can also leave a message on the Fiesta at Fuqua Facebook page.

The kids will also receive free dental and vision exams, along with a free haircut during the event. This year's bash will be held August 6 at Fuqua Park from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.
