City breaks ground on new fire station

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -The Lawton Fire Department held a special ceremony to kick off construction of the city's newest fire station.

City leaders were on site for the official ground breaking for Fire Station #8. The station, located on Southwest Bishop Road between Southwest 52nd and 67th streets, is the first of four new facilities the city is building over the next three years. The station will service southwest Lawton, an area fire officials noted was in need of a faster response time.

Fire Chief Dewayne Burk is excited about the department's newest building and what it will mean for the city.

"I think in all honesty, with the addition of this particular station in this area, you're going to see this part really begin to flourish and develop around this fire station. I think it will be essentially the gateway to the southwest portion of Lawton," Chief Burk said.

This is the first additional fire station the city has built since 1980. The project began with a vote in 2012, with a projected $6.5 million price tag.

Construction is expected to last around nine months.

    Today is the last day to apply for voter registration for the special elections in November. Anyone not registered to vote -- or needing to change registration information -- can do so by mailing a voter registration application form postmarked no later than midnight tonight. Application forms can be found at the County Election Board Office in the courthouse, as well as any post office, public library or motor vehicle licensing agency.
