LPS board meets to discuss superintendent

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) -The Lawton Public Schools superintendent's job is in the hands of the school board.

The board is presently meeting in executive session at the Shoemaker Center to determine his future with the district.

Before the meeting was called, it was unclear what exactly would be discussed.

"Prior to the May 2 board meeting, I got a phone call telling me the intention of three board members to remove me as superintendent, and since May 2 I've been waiting for an opportunity to find out what the issue was. So, my hope for tonight is to just get through the issues, figure out what we need to keep doing as a district and soldier on," Superintendent Deighan said.

There have been rumors for a few weeks that Deighan's job status is shaky and that the board was strongly considering making a change at the top.

Deighan was hired in 2013 and came to Lawton from Ringwood, Oklahoma, where he was the superintendent. He has 20 years of educational experience under his belt.

The board members called the special meeting to order at 5 p.m., and immediately went behind closed doors for their executive session. That debate will remain private. The meeting lasted until nearly 11 p.m. and the board did not take action on the employment of Superintendent Deighan. None of the members commented after the meeting, so it's still unclear as to the specifics of why his future with the district was called into question.

The board's next regularly scheduled meeting is Monday, May 23, but that agenda has already been set without an item regarding Deighan, so the next time the board could address his employment, barring another special meeting, would be June 6.
