LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - Comanche County women were recognized for outstanding service to their community on Saturday. The Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women hosts this event every year to honor 5 women in the county who go above and beyond the call of duty.

They also gave out $500 scholarships to 4 local high school seniors, which is something fairly new the commission is doing.

Dr. Vickie Lindsey, who was honored, says she was surprised to get the award for doing something she loves.

"The community is what I love,” said Lindsey “I grew up here, and so anything that I can help, especially for the veterans. It’s the love of my life and my passion. So I’m very excited."

Another thing new for the commission this year, they recognized two women for the legacy award for spending a great part of their life serving the county. On Saturday, the women found out who nominated them and why at the ceremony.
