Wichita State's Derrico returns to home state of Oklahoma

LAWTON, Okla (KSWO) – Wichita State middle-infielder and Sterling Native Laurie Derrico has started 39 of 41 games for the Shockers this season as a true freshman. In her freshman campaign, she is hitting .302 with eight homeruns and 28 RBI's. Earning an NCAA tournament berth was certainly a special feat for Derrico, but being able to come back to Oklahoma to begin the journey is even better.

"Actually really awesome because Norman is just 45 minutes away from the rest of my family and friends,” explains Derrico. “So it's cool for them to see what I've been working all my life for. And get a chance to play D-1. And going to Regionals my first year, it's awesome."

Derrico says that in her first year of college ball, the transition took plenty of work. Her biggest adjustment being constantly facing great pitching.

"High school was a lot slower than college. Especially pitching-wise. Pitching is a lot better. In college, you face a good pitcher every single at bat. High school, especially playing Class A ball, you might see one or two good pitchers throughout the season. Maybe have to wait until state. So, Definitely pitching is an adjustment I've had to make. Adjusting every time at bat, it's a lot different in college ball," says Derrico.
