FORT SILL, OK (KSWO) -Freedom Elementary School on Fort Sill recently made history as the first primary school on a U.S. military base to earn the National Healthy School’s top honor.

The school made several changes to be awarded the gold status. The students and staff changed the lunch menu, added more time to the length of P.E. classes and put a garden on campus. Principal Mikel Shanklin says they couldn't have done it without the Freedom Elementary staff.

"It was a hard challenge, but we are so excited because it pulled us together as a team. And coming from two different schools, trying to become a healthy, fit school and reaching the gold helped us come together as a team," Shanklin said

Shanklin says she gives a huge thanks to Fort Sill for their support as well and for providing the garden towers, which were a necessity to get the gold status.
