LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - At the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton just in time for their Memorial Day ceremony Monday, the Avenue of Flags is on display for the first time in three years.  The large flags lined the roads through the cemetery as different military organizations laid wreaths down to honor the soldiers who lost their lives serving this country. During the ceremony, the Lawton Rangers presented the colors, State Representative Jeff Coody of Grandfield was the guest speaker, and young, local musicians sang patriotic songs.

The weather has cooperated enough to let them have the ceremony outside, the way it is always planned. But that wasn’t the case in years past. Weather from the past two years has prevented them from having this ceremony outside, or prevented them from having it at all.

They were so happy they got to lay wreaths down at the Veteran’s Field of Honor this year.

"I dedicate this in his memory of what he did to make us free," said Vicki Rutledge, president of the Women’s Auxiliary Post #193.

Rutledge is honoring her father on this Memorial Day, who lost a leg in the Vietnam War, but still continued to serve.

"It brings tears right now to my eyes, but he even went back in the army with a prosthesis leg, and served his country until he passed away," said Rutledge.

Not everyone knew someone in the military lost in battle, but they still came to pay their respects.

Representative Coody says on these days of remembrance, the community comes together.

"It’s really great to see those who have taken time out of a special day that otherwise might be a vacation, and take time to honor and remember those who have served all of us," said Coody.

Something special about the Avenue of Flags, if you choose to head out to the memorial and see them. They were all flags that were once draped over the caskets of fallen soldiers.
