Area Yacht club hosts Hobie Fleet 251 Regatta

LAWTON, Okla (KSWO) - What better way to enjoy a summer weekend than on the lake. That's exactly what happened today for many boaters as the Sunken Bridge Yacht Club held a boat race at Lake Lawtonka.

It was the Annual Hobie Fleet 251 Regatta. 18 boats from Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and more gathered together to race for the Oklahoma Championship. Teams of one or two people were in control of Hobie catamarans ranging from 16 to 18 feet.

“It's a one design boat. This is a 16-foot boat. We will be racing against other boats that are identical,” explains Jimmie Smith, regatta chairman. “They can be tuned a little differently. Makes a big difference. But they are one design boats, so everybody is on the same boat. Different people are competing on the same boat.”

Not only does the design of the boat come into play, but also the wind. 10 to 20 mile per hour winds are expected to help racers. If it increases, trouble can arise.

“If it gets more than that, they can also sail, but it gets pretty testy. The wind, the steady wind is the way to go because you don't have to shed in your sail as much. You don't have to tack as much. If you have gust, that's trickier because it can actually tip these boats over,” says Kade McClure, member of Sunken Bridge Yacht Club. “But if it changes, the wind changes and it clocks around, today it's from the south-southwest. If it clocks around, that race committee will actually stop the race and change the line to accommodate the wind.”

12 area businesses donated money to help put on this year’s event.
