DUNCAN, OK (KSWO) - Competitive swimming in the Duncan area is growing thanks to the Simmons Center. The facility's aquatics team is a club team involved in USA YMCA competitive swimming made up of children 8 to 14 years old. Over a year ago the team didn't have many athletes to stay competitive, but according to head coach Carlton Fancher, the program has spiked since September of last year.

“We started out with six kids and it's grown to 19. And we've had some come and go because swimming is not a sport that's for everybody. It's a very demanding sport. Physically, mentally. Diet, exercise outside the pool,” says Fancher. “But swimming, what you notice about swimming is it teaches kids time management. It's teaches kids to get up early in the morning. We have some kids that go twice a day. They learned when to allocate their time for school, for family, for God, and sleep most generally.”

This year's squad has proven to be a force having qualified for the Oklahoma YMCA State Championships in Edmond. Fancher believes this success will feed into the high school, and make Duncan a swimming power in the future.

“Swimming has been kind of a dormant thing in Duncan. So this year, next weekend, we're going to the summer YMCA state championships. And out of my 19 kids, there are 13 or 14 of them that are ranked in the top six in every event. And that's never happened in Duncan. And I'm pretty excited about it and our kids are excited about it and I think we've shown the community we're growing,” says Fancher.

Open tryouts for children six years old and older are held every Tuesday evening at 6:30 at the Simmons Center.
