LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - A Lawton church is inviting everyone out to celebrate world peace at the International Day of Peace Celebration Wednesday.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Lawton will put on the event at 5 p.m. It will showcase local organizations that promote peace. It's the second year the church has put together the event. The day is celebrated throughout the world.

Lawton's event will have local speakers and music, and, like other events across the globe, will end with group meditation.

"We're wanting to promote peace in our community and highlight those barriers to peace," said event organizer Paul Martin.
"Not everyone in our community may enjoy the same level of peace and security that others do, and we want to highlight that."

The event kicks off at 5 p.m. at Shepler Park on the corner of 4th Street and West Gore Boulevard. Speakers start at 6 p.m., and local musicians will take the stage at 7 p.m. A local activist will speak at the event, and members of Comanches on the Move, against the Dakota Access Pipeline, will also be in attendance. The open mic will start at 7:30 p.m. and anyone is allowed to stand up to say their piece.
