Voter registration deadline nears end

LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - If you haven't registered to vote, you have just under three weeks to do so.

The election isn't until November 8th, but voter registration ends October 11th in Texas and October 14th in Oklahoma. Comanche County election officials say people miss the deadline every year.

Monday, people were coming in and out of the Comanche County Election board all day, registering to vote in the November election. That is something election board secretary Amy Sims said she has seen a lot of recently.

"The registration has gone up quite a bit and we have a lot of registration drives going on right now,” Sims said. “This office, we even go out and do a lot of registration drives because we want everyone to have the opportunity to vote before the cut-off.”

Sims said in her opinion, it is pretty obvious why registration has skyrocketed leading into this presidential election.

"I think because it's just so controversial right now,” Sims said.

Sims also said city charter changes in Lawton and State Question 792 about beer and wine sales, also have a lot of people signing up to vote. Sims said she is encouraged by the voter registration drives going on all over town.

"If you don't come register to vote, your voice won't be heard and you're pretty much giving your vote to somebody else,” Sims said.

For the last two and a half weeks of voter registration, the election board will be out in full-force working to get as many voters as possible.

"We have people in their churches registering people to vote and businesses, we're trying to set up outside of businesses so everyone will have the opportunity to vote,” Sims said. “We want to make it as simple and easy as possible."

The Lawton League of Women Voters will be hosting a voter registration drive Tuesday at the Lawton City Hall from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. All you need to register is your driver’s license number or the last four digits of your social security number.
