LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - For the second time in eight months, accused killer Robert Long is on trial for the murder of a man in Lawton.

Long is charged with first-degree murder for the March 2014 shooting of Johnny Allen at a Lawton motel. Police say Long robbed Allen and another man, with Allen being shot and killed in the robbery. The first trial, back in January, ended with a hung jury and the judge declared a mistrial.  Tuesday, jury selection for the trial was complete.

Long’s first trial was relatively short, with the jury hearing two days of testimony and the defense only calling one witness, the defendant’s brother. David, it was a relatively short case.  The jury only deliberated for about five hours before telling the judge they were deadlocked, causing the judge to declare it a mistrial, moving it to the September – October jury docket.

Police said Long robbed Allen and another man, killing Allen in the process. They did not figure out Long was a suspect in that crime until several months later when the Lawton Gang Unit received a tip. Long was already in jail at that time for an unrelated drug crime, but when police searched his home they found tennis shoes with blood on them and 9mm bullets, the same type used in Allen’s murder.

When Long was arrested for the unrelated drug crime, he had blood on his sweatpants and, with him now being a suspect for the murder, police sent both the bloody pants and the bloody shoes found at his home to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for testing. Both came back positive for Allen’s blood.

While he was in jail for his drug crime, Long escaped but was ultimately found on top of a train near Durant several days later and was charged with murder.
