Dropout recovery programs improve Native American student graduation rates

LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- Native American Students are at the bottom nationwide for graduation rates.

However, a report published in U.S. News said Oklahoma has the highest graduation rate for Native Americans compared with other states. The Sooner State is home to more tribes than any other state and about 9 percent of its students are Native American.

There are also special programs like I-AM-NDN through the Comanche Nation Prevention and Recovery Center to help local students stay in school. The Great Plains Score Academy helps students 16-19 who quit school, get their high school diploma.

Oklahoma City fire officials are warning people to make sure they install smoke detectors in their home after battling 54 structure fires so far this month. The 54th fire was yesterday afternoon and was spotted by neighbors who called 911. Two people were inside the home asleep at the time. They made it out safely, and the blaze was put out but authorities say the smoke detectors in the home did not have batteries.
