MIDLAND, TX (KWES) -

For an organization known for promoting players to the big leagues, the Midland Rockhounds, said seeing a former manager win the World Series was pretty cool.

Over 1,200 miles separates the celebration in Chicago to reflection in Midland. The World Series victory for the Chicago Cubs could be felt all the way in the Tall City as members of the Midland Rockhounds were just as excited for their former manager’s victory as those in the Windy City.

Jeff VonHolle, Assistant General Manager of the Midland Rockhounds, said, “We take a lot of pride in developing not only players but field staff or managers as well.”

That’s right, Joe Maddon, the manager of the team who recently ended the 108-year curse has ties to Midland. Seen in team photos wearing #20, the man famous for thick-rimmed glasses and his calm demeanor was once a manager for the then Midland Angels in 1985 and 1986.

In the two years as manager, Maddon’s record was 121-148 but as VanHolle said sometimes it’s not about the record but the lessons learned.

“I don’t think anybody has ever said you didn’t win at the minor league level so you don’t have much of a future at the major league level. It's more about how you go about managing the people that you have, treating the people that you do have and just the day in and day out stuff and not so much at all the wins and losses,” said VonHolle

VanHolle has been the Assistant GM for the last 23 years and just missed Maddon’s time here. He said that he hopes to see Maddon next month at the Winter Meetings and he added he knows what he’ll say to him if he gets the chance.

“We’ll certainly be happy to say hey Joe from Midland, Texas. Congratulations.”

Beyond their war of words, the row touched on several sensitive issues in Trump's White House, including a lack of racial diversity, security in the executive mansion and a culture that some there feel borders on paranoia.
