Armed Services YMCA hosts reception for veterans

LAWTON, OK (KSWO)-The Armed Services YMCA hosted a special reception tonight to honor our veterans featuring speakers, artists, and music.

The Eisenhower Gentry singers kicked off the night with some patriotic numbers after the school’s JROTC posted the colors.

The night was a chance to recognize and thank those who fought for our freedom.

Ken Sue Doerfel, whose husband served in the Vietnam war, spoke at tonight's event about the importance of honoring our military men and women.

She says, “During Vietnam when soldiers came home they were spit on, no one acknowledged them or that they were even in a war, or acknowledged the wounded, POW’s, missing, so I phrase my talks so that the Vietnam veterans finally feel like they have come home."

The reception also included more than 360 art entries from Lawton area elementary school students depicting the theme of "How to Thank a Veteran."  Three winners were announced in each of three divisions.  Lily Lang, a student at John Adams Elementary was one of the first-place winners and says she participated in the contest because she sees her dad, who is in the military, as her hero.

Arvest Bank also helped make tonight's reception possible.  The Armed Services YMCA serves about 16,000 service members at Fort Sill yearly.
