LAWTON, OK (KSWO)-The Elgin Police Department welcomed a new K-9 officer to the force. His name is Valdemort and he's a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois from Holland.
Valdemort cost the city about 5 thousand dollars.
He's trained in narcotics detection, article searches and protecting his handler.
Officer Ralph Parsons is Valdemort's handler and says the benefit he provides for the community is two-fold.
"Not only can he detect narcotics, but also as a second goal, he acts as a deterrent," says Parson. He adds, "When a drug dealer knows a city has a K-9 unit, that deters them from bringing that activity into this community."
Officer Parsons says the community also helps in Valdemort's care. Area businesses in Fletcher and Elgin have donated services to help with his daily needs.
