FLETCHER, OK (KSWO) -Volunteers in Fletcher are gearing up for their annual toy drive to help families in need, but this year, they're struggling with donations.

The Fletcher Christmas Store is held at the Lecher Community Center. It helps needy families put presents under the tree at no cost. Parents can come in and pick up a few toys and clothes based on the number of children they have. However, The Christmas Store doesn't know how many families they will be able to help right now because they have yet to receive any donations.

"I don't think there is anything more disappointing to kids than to wake up and not have anything under their Christmas tree," said Sarah Smith, a mother and volunteer.

Sarah Smith not only shops for her 16 year old daughter each year at the Fletcher Christmas Store, but offers a helping hand to other families in need to take home gifts for their children as well. She says usually by this time, the community center is half full of toys, clothes and stuffed animals, but not this year. Smith hopes the community will step forward and remember how giving is what the holidays are all about.

"Without donations, the store doesn't exist at all," said Smith, "so, they're really important and since the program has grown and grown over the past couple of years, the need just gets bigger, so we can't give them presents without donations."

Penny Hammonds started this program seven years ago because she noticed a need in the community, but now the program helps over 100 children each year. She says you can help families like Smith's by giving...

"We're asking for any kind of new items, toys, gifts, gifts for teenagers," said Hammonds, "we'll even accept monetary donations if you don't want to go shop and we'll go do the shopping."

Angela Houser has shopped for her two young boys at the Fletcher Christmas Store for the past four years. She works hard to provide everything she can, but says unfortunately each year it's a challenge.

"Every year I look forward to this, because I am a single parent," said Houser, "they don't have as much as they should and deserve and it's not their fault because I'm struggling."

Houser says donating any way you can, will not only help put a smile on her children's faces this holiday season, but the faces of hundreds children in the area.

"Just please donate to the Fletcher community and please help us, and make every child have a better Christmas."

If you would like to help donate, drop off toys, board games, Legos, Barbie's, basketballs, soccer balls or baseballs, etc. you can do so at Fletcher Town Hall, the Fletcher Bank, or any Church in the town. The store will be open on December 12th, 13th, and 14th inside the Fletcher Community Center from 6 until 8:30 p.m.
