LAWTON, OK (KSWO) - Sunday night in Lawton, candles were lit to remember lost loved ones during the holidays.

The local chapter of Compassionate Friends, a group of people who have experienced the unimaginable, the loss of a child, gathered at the church for the Worldwide Candle Lighting. Members all lit the candles at 7 p.m. all across the world.

A member of the local chapter Georgia Smith says joining together, and lighting the candles, helps the parents during this time of year.

"The holidays are always more difficult because that's the time that families are together,” said Georgia Smith with Compassionate Friends. “And it's just more evident at that time that there is an empty chair at the table during the holidays when the rest of the family is there. It just feels the loss even more."

They lit five candles for their child, each one carrying meaning like grief and love.

Other parents came to tell their story, and poetry was read before the candles were lit.
