LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- Longtime Walters City Manager, John Sheppard retired today after serving 13 years in his position.

Friends, family, and supporters gathered on Main street to honor him at his retirement party.

The event was complete with food, awards, and new faces. Shawn Strange, the city new manager appointee, was also in attendance.

Sheppard says although his time as city manager has come to an end, he plans to continue his involvement in the development of Walters.

"People keep hitting me up to do different things. There's all types of stuff coming up. I’m going to be doing a lot more work. My wife and I already contribute a lot of time to the welfare food pantry and I’m going to take over for one of the men of our church. He's getting older and wanting to step back. I’m going to pick up his slack on it and we're going to put a lot more time in social issues in town and see if we can improve the lives of a lot more people.”

Strange will replace Sheppard in January 2017. He says hopes to continue the legacy with his support and friendship.

"It's been a pleasure working with him. He's been helping me out. John will be around for the community and for all of us. You know he's always going to be a resource to Walters and that helps me out tremendously knowing that I have that resource available at all times,” said Strange.
