Arraignment delayed in Tulsa officer's manslaughter case

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A scheduled arraignment has been delayed for a Tulsa police officer charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed man.

Tulsa Police Officer Betty Shelby appeared in court Thursday to be arraigned on the first-degree manslaughter charge, stemming from the September shooting death of Terence Crutcher. But Judge Doug Drummond pushed back the arraignment date until Feb. 1 and set new deadlines for attorneys to file motions in the case.

Prosecutors accuse Shelby of reacting unreasonably when she fatally shot Crutcher because Crutcher wasn't armed or combative and was following commands to raise his hands.

Shelby's attorneys say she shot Crutcher because she feared for her life, believing Crutcher was reaching into his vehicle for a gun. No weapon was found on Crutcher or in his vehicle.
