Fort Sill soldiers head out for holiday block leave

LAWTON, OK (KSWO)-Thousands of Fort Sill soldiers bid a temporary farewell to the post Monday night as they headed out for holiday block leave.

Over 23-hundred basic trainees, AIT, and other soldiers in a student status boarded buses taking them to airports in Lawton, Oklahoma City, and Dallas.
Post officials say the leave is especially nice for the newer soldiers, who appreciate the time they get to spend with family.

Adrianna Ballenger, a soldier from Colorado in basic training at Fort Sill said, “I'm beyond excited, but I wish I could just finish it out because I just have 2 weeks left, but I'm definitely in need of a break.”

Col. Lee Overby said, “For many of them it's their first time away from home and the holidays can be a depressing time so it's good for them to get back home, recharged and get back.”

For the soldiers that stay on post during the holidays and will not get to see family, Fort Sill offers the "Adopt-A-Soldier" Program.  Through the program, local military families open their home to a soldier or group of soldiers on Christmas day.

The cadre will also get a break and get to enjoying several activities like bowling, a movie night, and sports events.

The soldiers will return on January 4th.
