LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- For those who might have had a hard time staying up late to ring in the new year, they went to Apache Casino Hotel to celebrate 12 hours early. The elderly party goers welcomed 2017 at the stroke of noon with balloons and prizes.

Many of them said they were simply happy to be thought about during this fun day.

Sheila Jones was just one of many retirees eager to bring in the new year.

"Everybody wants to feel important,” said Jones. “Everybody wants to feel like they are remembered on holidays, and the casino is good about doing that all year long."

She and her husband arrived at the casino just after the balloon drop. She says their plan is to take part in all the festivities throughout the day.

"There's not a whole lot for the older to do,” said Jones. “Now that we've retired you know we need some excitement in our lives and that's a good thing."

Marketing Director of Apache Casino, Barrett DeFay said his hope is that everyone feels a token of their appreciation while they can, especially those who may not be around for the celebration at midnight.

"We've got a lot of older folks that come in that don't like to stay late, and we just wanted to spread the wealth a little bit,” said DeFay. “Give something fun for our dated customers and some of our regulars.

The casino gave away $2,017 in honor of the new year.

Although, this was the first-year Apache Casino Hotel held this event their hope is to continue this tradition for years to come.
