Awareness Walk raises money for Taliaferro Mental Health Clinic

LAWTON, OK (KSWO)- We have an update on the Out of the Darkness and Into the Light Suicide Awareness Walk.

$1,150 dollars was raised for the Jim Taliaferro Mental Health Clinic at the walk.

Students in Western Oklahoma State College's Nursing Program put on the event at Cameron University not only to raise awareness about suicide but to help prevent it by educating others about the risks and signs.

Oklahoma ranks 9th in the nation when it comes to suicide.

    Elgin High School’s 8th annual Empty Bowls Dinner will be held on Thursday, February 1st from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Elgin High School Cafeteria. The event is hosted by Elgin High School Art classes, Art Club & Family and Consumer Science classes. The community is invited to come out and support this effort for hunger relief.  EHS Students have created handmade clay bowls.

    The Chickasaw Nation Medical Center (1921 Stonecipher Blvd) in Ada will host a nursing career fair on Tuesday, February 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event is open to all registered nurses, practical nurses and scrub technicians licensed in Oklahoma. Applications can be completed online at chickasaw.net/careers. Managers will be available for interviews and able to hire on-site.

    A Sallisaw police officer shot a suspect Sunday night. Sallisaw police stopped a silver Ford Focus in the parking lot of the Northeastern Health Systems-Sequoyah.  The driver Jonathan Duane Atchley began assaulting two officers. Officers were forced to shoot Atchley. Atchley was treated at Northeastern Health Systems hospital but he died from the gunshot wound. The Sallisaw Police Department requested OSBI agents investigate the officer-involved shooting.
